RTK Tickets

RTK is a live-event analytics company processing tens of millions of dollars in transactions annually. Using Olive, teams ranging from executive staff to market analysts can now create data-connected analytical dashboards through simple prompts. RTK's teams edit and share dozens of tools across the entire organization like:

Previously, RTK would use off-the-shelf software like Tableau or build tools with their in-house engineering team. RTK operates in an extremely complex market, analyzing signals across thousands of live events to determine optimal price valuations. Their team of analysts, engineers, operations staff, and more relies on data to make the best decision in the quickest time. This includes sophisticated business intelligence from real-time dashboards to reliable lookup tables that would quickly showcase trendlines and highlight issues.

As RTK grew, leadership faced a common scaling challenge: maintaining visibility into key business metrics without derailing core development work. The engineering team needed to focus on improving core valuation software, but the team desperately needed better tools. Casey Klein, Chief Strategy Officer, explained:

When Klein had a hunch about market segments or wondered about operational challenges, he couldn't explore the data himself. RTK realized that a tool that could allow anyone on the team (technical or not) to explore any curiosity about business data could turn into a competitive advantage.

The Challenge

The team had consistently tried alternatives that would often fall short of their goal:

Custom hard-coded dashboards required engineering time for every modification - time that the team couldn't justify given competing priorities. The team valued quick iteration and experimentation, and going back to data teams for each question was not the best use of their time.

Existing services like Tableau proved too complex for non-technical users and still required manual development intervention frequently. Klein put into words a story that is common for many Olive champions: “[Tableau] was just like a lot of hunting and pecking where I was trying to marry tables within databases. There are different features that were far outside of my scope of understanding”

The visualizations that Klein has been building on Olive would not have been possible by a non-technical user on Tableau, let alone by a technical user in some acceptable time frame. Klein recounted his experience trying to build some of these dashboards in Tableau before moving their team to Olive.

“It's unfathomable to build. I mean, I have no confidence I could have built it in Tableau. It's very complex with different variables popping in and views popping in... would have been impossible.”— Klein

“I might have an idea at any given time that I need to flush out on my own. If I were to do something in-house, an idea kind of has to be flushed out to justify inserting that into our queue for our development team to work on.”— Klein

With Olive, Klein could “jump into Olive while I'm watching a football game on my couch because I'm curious about this one item. And pretty soon it evolves into a totally new dashboard that I look at regularly for actionable business insights.”

Olive is now a daily part of operations at RTK, and is integrated across roles ranging from founding executives to directors to analysts. They have dozens of dashboards created by many people on the team and have become integral to the team's decision-making process.
